BAPTISTS

баптисты, члены религиозной секты, проповедующей разновидность протестантизма.
Roger Williams has often been regarded as the founder of the first Baptist church in America at Providence, R. I., though recent Baptist historians has challenged the claim. The views of Baptists subjected them to persecution in New England during the 17th century, but they gained strength in New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia during the colonial period. They were dominant on the frontier, and after the Civil War the number of Negro Baptists grew rapidly owing to the ease of forming Baptist church. Now, Baptists, with church membership of over 23,000,000 comprise the largest denomination of Protestants in the U.S.
